Although Lupus is an incurable, sometimes deadly disease that affects millions of Americans, most people know very little about this autoimmune disorder beyond the line “it’s not Lupus” heard on countless episodes of the popular TV show, House. The Lupus Foundation of America is hoping to change that, and has been organizing charity walks around the nation for many years in efforts to raise funds to support researchers working on a cure, as well as to raise general awareness about the disease.
Walk for Lupus Now, Los Angeles will take place on Saturday, September 29, atExposition Park in Los Angeles, adjacent to the L.A. Memorial Coliseum and theCalifornia Science Center. Registration starts at 9am, and the walk will begin at 10am. Walkers will also be able to participate in other social activities, and refreshments will be provided. Prizes will be awarded to walkers who raise over $100, as one of the primary goals for the event is fundraising. Some celebrities who have supported the cause or have attended the L.A. walk in the past are: Tichina Arnold, Snoop Dogg and wife Shante Broadus, Toni Braxton, Simenona Martinez, George Lopez, andMercedes Scelba-Shorte.
In addition to theses charity walks, the Lupus Foundation also has local chapters and an online community that serve as support groups for individuals who suffer from Lupus. While it is important to fund research for better treatments and cures for the disease, it is equally important for patients to have strong support groups consisting of family members and other people that suffer from the condition.
